SARAJEVO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Johann Sattler handed over a medical donation, consisting of medical ventilators, ultrasound devices and other protective equipment, to the University Clinical Hospital in Mostar, 120 km south of the capital Sarajevo, the state-owned news agency FENA reported on Monday.
This donation, worth 177,000 KM (102,000 U.S. dollars), is a part of an assistance program in the fight against coronavirus. Sattler said on this occasion that the donated equipment will be of good use even after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The region of Herzegovina, the southern part of BiH, was particularly affected by the pandemic, as its tourism sector has been losing money due to the pandemic. The EU is actively working in this field as well, said Sattler, adding that the EU has set aside 70 million euros for the economic sector.
Nevenko Herceg, the prime minister of the local government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, said that this was only part of the EU's assistance to BiH in preventing the spread of coronavirus.
"We have to thank the EU member states for helping the overall economic recovery of BiH, our canton, and especially the recovery of tourism as the most affected part of the economy in our region," said Herceg.
